Gymnocalycium damsii var. multiproliferum is a distinctive and highly prolific cactus variety, valued for its neat appearance and ease of propagation.

Botanical Description:

  • Growth Habit: This variety is famous for its heavily branched habit, producing numerous offsets—almost one from each areole. These offshoots detach easily and root quickly, forming dense colonies.
  • Stem: Typically olive green to bronze, highly decorative, and grows up to 10 cm tall and 8–10 cm in diameter in cultivation (smaller in habitat). The stems are rounder and less raised than other varieties.
  • Spines: Short, soft, and nearly useless for defense.
  • Flowers: Funnel-shaped, white to pale pink, up to 6 cm long. External tepals are greenish with reddish margins; internal tepals are white to light pinkish. Flowers are produced almost continuously throughout the year.
  • Fruit: Oblong, reddish when mature.

Cultivation & Care:

  • Light: Prefers some shade; too much heat can cause stems to turn brown/red.
  • Soil: Well-draining cactus mix is essential.
  • Watering: Regular watering in spring and summer; allow soil to dry between waterings. Stop watering in winter to allow dormancy.
  • Propagation: Extremely easy—offsets drop off with minimal touch and root readily. Can also be propagated by seed.
  • Temperature: Avoid temperatures below 7°C; protect from frost.

Notable Features:

  • Prolific Offsetting: One of the most prolific Gymnocalycium varieties, making it popular among collectors.
  • Continuous Blooming: Flowers almost year-round, adding ornamental value.
