Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is an iconic columnar cactus of the Sonoran Desert, prized for its bold upright form and timeless desert character. Young plants begin as simple ribbed green columns lined with sturdy spines, while mature specimens may eventually develop the famous upward-curving arms that define the classic saguaro silhouette. This exceptionally slow-growing species is treasured as a dramatic specimen for xeric landscapes, conservatories, and specialty cactus collections. In late spring, mature plants may produce large white flowers near the stem tips, followed by red fruit. Its architectural form, longevity, and unmistakable presence make it one of the most celebrated cacti in cultivation.

Care: Provide full sun and a very fast-draining, mineral-rich cactus mix. Water deeply but infrequently during warm weather, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and keep nearly dry in winter. Good drainage is essential, as saguaros are highly sensitive to rot in cool or damp conditions. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. This species grows best in hot, arid conditions with excellent airflow and low humidity. Protect from frost, especially when young or container-grown, and avoid frequent repotting since growth is extremely slow.
