Parodia ‘Golden Tower’ (Parodia leninghausii) is a striking South American cactus admired for its luminous golden spines and graceful columnar form. Young plants begin as rounded golden globes, then slowly elongate into upright stems that can cluster from the base with age. The fine, silky spines give the plant a soft, glowing appearance, making it especially attractive in bright light. Mature specimens may produce satiny yellow flowers near the crown in spring or summer, adding even more color to this elegant species. Its compact footprint, bright coloration, and easygoing nature make it an excellent choice for containers, windowsills, and cactus collections.
Care: Give bright light to gentle sun, with protection from harsh afternoon heat in very hot climates. Use a fast-draining cactus mix amended with pumice, perlite, or coarse grit, and always plant in a container with excellent drainage. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry before watering again; reduce watering sharply in winter, but do not leave the plant cold and wet. This species appreciates a little more regular moisture in warm weather than many desert cacti, but it is still highly susceptible to rot in soggy soil. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Keep on the dry side during cool weather to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Protect from frost.
