Austrocylindropuntia subulata f. monstrosa ‘Gumby’, also known as Eve’s Needle cactus, is a must-have conversation piece for succulent lovers. Its chunky, twisting green stems reach upward like playful fingers, giving every plant a one-of-a-kind sculptural shape. Tiny awl-shaped leaves on new growth and fine spines add even more character. Perfect for a statement container, sunny patio, cactus collection, or frost-protected xeric garden, ‘Gumby’ delivers bold style without demanding much attention. Give it bright light, sharply draining soil, and protection from hard freezes, and this fast-growing, drought-tolerant favorite will reward you with years of distinctive appeal.

Care Instructions

Light: Place in full sun or very bright light. Aim for at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for sturdy, compact growth. Acclimate the plant gradually to intense outdoor sun to help prevent scorching.

Soil: Use a very fast-draining cactus and succulent mix amended with pumice, perlite, coarse sand, or fine gravel. Never use dense soil that remains wet. Outdoor plants perform best in raised beds, rocky ground, or slopes with excellent drainage.

Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Water more regularly during warm, active growth and much less in winter. Do not let the container stand in water; consistently wet soil can quickly cause root and stem rot.

Temperature: Protect from hard freezes and prolonged cold, wet conditions. Container plants can be moved to a bright, sheltered location before frost. Indoors, keep the cactus away from cold drafts and provide strong light.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. One or two applications per growing season are usually sufficient. Do not fertilize during winter dormancy.
