Make room for a cactus that commands attention. Eve’s Needle (Austrocylindropuntia subulata, formerly Opuntia subulata) brings bold height, sculptural texture, and unmistakable character to your collection. Its upright, cylindrical green stems, long awl-shaped leaves, and prominent spines create a striking focal point for a patio container or sunny, frost-protected garden. With a branching habit and vigorous growth in warm conditions, it’s an appealing choice for collectors looking to give their display a dramatic vertical accent. Unlike the knobby ‘Gumby’ form, standard Eve’s Needle develops elongated stems with an upright, shrub-like presence. Provide plenty of sunlight, freely draining soil, and watering only after the soil dries, and protect it from freezing temperatures. Choose Eve’s Needle to turn an ordinary plant display into a standout collection. Display away from walkways, children, and pets because of its sharp spines.

Care Instructions

·       Light: Provide plenty of direct sunlight. Outdoors, choose a sunny position and gradually acclimate plants to intense sun. Indoors, use your brightest sunny window; thin, stretched growth can indicate insufficient light.

·       Soil and drainage: Use a fast-draining cactus mix amended with pumice or perlite. Choose a pot with drainage holes and empty any saucer after watering. In the garden, avoid low spots and soil that stays wet.

·       Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting mix has dried throughout, then let excess water drain away. Check more often during warm, active growth, but do not follow a fixed watering schedule. Reduce watering substantially during cool weather or slow growth.

·       Temperature: Protect from freezing temperatures and prolonged cold, wet conditions. Bring container plants into a bright, frost-free location before winter weather arrives. Provide good airflow and avoid cold drafts indoors.

·       Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth with a cactus fertilizer, following the product’s dilution and frequency instructions. Avoid feeding dormant or stressed plants.

·       Repotting: Use a stable container to support the upright, branching stems. Repot when roots crowd the pot or drainage deteriorates, choosing a container only slightly larger than the root system. Handle roots gently and allow damaged roots to dry before resuming watering.

·       Maintenance: Remove dead or damaged stems with clean tools. Prune unwanted branches to manage size, and avoid pulling or twisting stems. Keep the plant in a location with room for its mature branching growth.
