Slow-growing and drought tolerant once established, it makes a striking choice for containers, rock gardens

Detailed Care Instructions

Light: Provide full sun to bright, direct light—ideally at least six hours daily. In very hot inland climates, light afternoon shade can reduce leaf scorch. Acclimate plants gradually when moving them from lower light into stronger sun.

Soil: Use a fast-draining, mineral-rich mix. A commercial cactus and succulent soil amended generously with pumice, perlite, coarse sand, or fine gravel works well. In the ground, plant on a slope or raised mound if drainage is less than excellent, and keep the crown slightly above the surrounding soil.

Water: Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. During active growth in spring and summer, check the soil every one to two weeks, adjusting for heat, rainfall, pot size, and drainage. Reduce watering in fall and winter; cool, wet soil is the greatest risk. Never leave the pot standing in water, and avoid letting water remain in the center of the rosette.

Temperature and humidity: This agave prefers warm, dry conditions with good air circulation. Protect it from prolonged freezes, especially when young or wet. If frost is expected, move container plants to a bright, sheltered location and keep them relatively dry. In humid climates, provide extra drainage and spacing.

Fertilizer: Feed sparingly. Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once in spring, with an optional second light feeding in early summer. Avoid heavy or frequent fertilizing, which can produce soft, weak growth and reduce variegation.
