Mammillaria voburnensis is a fascinating, freely clustering cactus native to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It thrives in sandy and stony soils, often growing alongside other cacti species.

This species forms mounds up to 30 cm high and wide, with globose to cylindrical stems that range from yellowish-green to dull green, sometimes with a reddish tinge. The plant produces abundant milky sap when injured. Its tubercles are small, sub-ovoidal, and arranged in 8-13 spirals, with silky wool and bristles filling the axils.

Mammillaria voburnensis features 5-9 radial spines, which are ivory white or yellowish, and 1-2 central spines that start brownish-red or yellow before turning ivory-brown. It blooms with small yellowish flowers tinged with red, and its club-shaped red fruits measure 18-25 mm long.

This cactus is slow-growing but eventually forms large clumps. It prefers full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and minimal watering during winter. It is best propagated from seeds and can tolerate light freezing temperatures if properly hardened off.

Mammillaria voburnensis is a resilient cactus, but it thrives best with proper care. Here are some essential tips:

  • Light: Place it in bright, indirect sunlight or direct sun for a few hours daily. Indoors, keep it within 3 feet of a bight-facing window for optimal growth.
  • Watering:  Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix with 70-80% mineral grit like coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.
  • Temperature: It prefers warm conditions but can tolerate light frost if acclimated. Ideal temperatures range from USDA Hardiness Zones 9a-11b.
